The Talking Roach
There once was a guy who worked for a successful software company – as a cleaner of the men’s room. He dreamed of being promoted to the next floor of the tower block, but his dream never became a reality.
Although, one day when he was cleaning the men’s room, he came across a roach. Just as he went to squash it, the roach cried out, ‘if you spare me, I will grant you one wish.’
So the man spared the roach, and in return his wish was granted, and the next morning he began work on the second floor of the tower block. His small flat became a fine townhouse, and he acquired his own office with personal computer.
But he became disheartened when he discovered there was another floor above him, and that meant there were people with higher authority above him. So he returned to the roach, and threatened to squash it, unless he got another wish. So his wish was granted, and the next morning he began work on the third floor. His townhouse became a large bungalow and he acquired a personal secretary and a larger office.
Although one day he was in the lift, and saw there were many more floors above his. So once again he returned to the roach and threatened it. His wish was granted, and the next day he began work on the tenth floor of the building. His bungalow became a cottage by the lake, and he acquired a larger office and more secretaries. But he was saddened to discover there were more floors above him, and so he returned to the roach with the same plan. And the next morning he started work on the very top floor.
Although he thought he was at the very top of the building, he discovered a small staircase in the corner of his rather large office. He climbed it and found himself on the roof of the building and he saw a small boy standing looking up to the sky at the edge of the roof.
The man approached the boy and asked him what was he doing. The boy replied that he was praying to God. And the man asked, ‘Do you mean to say there is someone with higher authority than me?’ The boy replied yes, there was a higher authority than him.
So the man returned to the roach and again threatened it. When asked for his wish, he said, ‘I wish to have the authority that God would have if he was on earth.’
His wish was granted, and the next day he began work on the bottom floor cleaning the men’s room.
